May 2009, News

Hello!  Thanks for reading my monthly newsletter / blog.  The month of May was a tough mental and emotional month for me.  Personally, I have been performing stand-up comedy all of my life “literally”, but officially went to the stage on January 27th 2004 and have not looked back sense.  Before performing comedy officially in the comedy clubs in theatres or wherever, I had a day job (you know…the main source of income; lively hood etc).  I have been blessed with having 2 sources of income, but comedy takes more time to get noticed and get your credits established (i.e. TV Shows etc).  Anyway, a weird series of events happened to me in May that I thought was interesting.  I will abbreviate the story here and if you want to know more or comment or give me advice please send me a message at the “contact Shawn” link on this website.  Anyway, here it goes…I got a call from a former co-worker that is no longer in Florida that told me “OUT THE BLUE” that I should apply for a position within the “day job” company in Colorado Springs, CO; that was on a Wednesday.  The following Friday, my boss came to visit me from St. Louis and told me that my position in Florida was going away and that I was going to receive a 60-day notice (layoff notice). On Sunday of the same week; I got a call from a comedy club booker “OUT THE BLUE” asking me to come headline his club.  I asked him where his club was and he said “COLORADO SPRINGS, CO”….WHOA!!!!   I was like oh my; ain’t this a sign?.  It gets better!  While I am in Colorado Springs doing the show; the comedian that opened for me is a HR recruiter for a company that is down the street from my house in Florida.  I’m like…OOOOOOOOOK---enough with the signs.  I have to admit…May was a stressful month for me, but never for one minute did I not bring the “FUNNY” to the people.  See…as a comedian we are here to make people laugh and make them feel good, but sometimes, we have tough times too.  But, we have to forget about it and keep pressing to make everyone feel better.  I love being a comedian and bringing joy to people’s hearts.  I don’t know what is going to happen next, but I believe and trust that God will lead me there.  It’s not what happens to you in life, but how you respond to what happens.  Keep grinding and keep pressing!  Since, I may be getting laid off…if anybody needs a comedian for any event BBQ’s, Divorce Parties, Baby Showers or whatever…tell them to holla at me..LOL!  Thanks for reading.
